It was a celebration galore yesterday on the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) campus as drums were rolled out to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of the school radio station: Unilorin 89.3 FM.
The 10th years anniversary celebration should have been held 13th August, for that was date the FM station was established ten years ago, but for the Eid el Kabir public holidays that fell on the date, the anniversary celebration programmes were postponed to yesterday 20th August 2019.
Yesterday's 10th years anniversary celebration of Unilorin 89.3 FM witness many events and activities which includes launching of a book, presentation of awards, entertainment of guests and delivery of keynote address.
The special keynote address at the ceremony was delivered by the Director General of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Ishiaq Modibbo Kawu.
In his address the Director General said he would not have been in the anniversary programme but for the intelligence of the team from the Unilorin 89.3 FM who play smart by tracking him down during sallah festive period. He said they didn't came to his office but to his residence, so he couldn't turn down the invitation.
He also said he make it a point of duty to be at the anniversary celebration because of cordial relationship and the respect he has for the present Unilorin Vice Chancellor Professor Sulyman Kareem Age who he was referring to as Senior Age throughout his speech.
He also said his good relationship with the University especially between 1980 and 1990 compelled him to honour the invitation.
Ishiaq Modibbo Kawu who spoke on the topic "Broadcasting for Sustainable Development" stated that through ages broadcasting has been used as instrument of national unity and national development. He said, for long broadcasting has always been used as platform for social, cultural and economic development.
The Director General narrated further that deregulation of the nation broadcasting sector in 1992 during the regime of Military Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida has changed the face of broadcasting in the country for good, for the monopoly which was hitherto been enjoying by state and federal government broadcasting stations were broken. There were lot of competitions which bring about many innovations in the industry.
He concluded his speech by saying broadcasting has vital roles to play in assisting in achieving of Sustainable Development. He then said, he wish the Unilorin 89.3 FM could be at the centre of the process.

Professor Ishiaq Oloyede, the present registrar of JAMB was given a Merit Award. He was the Vice Chancellor of Unilorin at the time the Unilorin 89.3 FM was launched.
Mr. Omololu Shomuyiwa, an alumnus of the UNILORIN get Special Recognition Award.
Dr. Ogunbodede was the compere at the event.
