Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Engineering Courses, Admission Requirements

On this page is the list of all Engineering programmes on offer at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU, Bauchi. The page also include the general admission requirements for all the courses.

Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology houses all the departments where all engineering courses are  taught.The Faculty was established with aim to produce graduates with high academic standard couples with extraordinary practical skills such that they will be able to face  modern time industrial and engineering challenges.

It is should be noted that engineering programmes did not start at ATBU until 1985, five years after the establishment of the school. They started with training students in electrical and electronics engineering.

Today, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University offers nine engineering courses and they are listed below.

  • Agriculture and Bioresourses Engineering 
  • Automobile Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer and Communication Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Mechanical and Production Engineering
  • Mechatronic and Systems Engineering
  • Petroleum Engineering
The Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, ATBU offers courses that lead to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Post Graduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Engineering (MEng) and (PhD) degree in Engineering.

At undergraduate level, all the programmes run for 5 years (10 Semesters). They lasted 4 years for students who gained admission through direct entry with maximum of OND qualification and 3 years for the students that gain admission with higher qualification like HND.

A student cannot use more than 7 years to do a programme and more than 6 and 5 years respectively for those that entered through direct entry 

All the above listed engineering programmes are approved by National University Commission (NUC) and fully accredited by Council for the Regulation of Engineering in  Nigeria (COREN)

Admission Requirements

There are two ways by which an applicant can gain admission to study any of the above courses in as much as he satisfy the admission requirements.
  1. Through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this include Pre-degree programme which qualify students to be admitted to 100 level and
  2. Through Direct Entry, including JUPEB which qualifies student to be admitted to 200 level.

For a student to be considered for admission to undergraduate degree through UTME (1) above, he must have five credit passes from either
  • West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
  • Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)/(NECO)
  • General Certificate Examination (GCE)
The five credit passes must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and either Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics or Geography or Biology and it must not be at more than two sittings.

A student must also pass Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) after which he must also pass the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) post UTME, making the required Cut-Off Mark for his chosen engineering programme.

It is also required of a student to pass one of the three exam above before he could be considered for an admission by direct entry.
