Biomedical Engineering University of Ibadan Nigeria

University of Ibadan Nigeria don't do Biomedical Engineering as a programme at undergradute.

What the university is doing instead is Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Laboratory Science a programme which is far different from the Biomedical Engineering. The course is not even the same with Biomedical Science. It should be noted here that, already we have mentioned three biomedical courses which are not same: Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Science and Medical Laboratory Science.

You should  read and understand what each of the courses entails so that you don't make a wrong decision on chosen a career for yourself .


Medical Laboratory Science/Technology

This is the course the University of Ibadan is doing. It is one of the medical science courses and it deal with performing diagnostic and analysis of body fluids - urine, blood as well as other specimens to know the cause of a particular disease or ailment so as to know the best treatment and  management. Medical Laboratory Scientist work in a hospital clinical laboratory, biotechnology laboratory and non clinical industrial laboratory.


Biomedical Science

Presently, Biomedical Science is the heart of all medical sciences. It usually involving the development of treatment and therapies for the human illnesses, diseases and disabilities. The biomedical scientist go as far as to grow artificial muscles and limbs from cell. Biomedical science involves a lot of scientific and laboratory research works to be able to get meaningful result.

Biomedical Engineering:

While the above two courses are part of medical science courses, this is purely an engineering programme. Biomedical Engineering apply biological science and engineering to design and make machines and devices -hearing aids, walking aids, diagnostic tools and equipment, medical software and more - useful in the healthcare industry.

If you are good in Science,  mathematic, and you like to design gadgets, tools, machines and at the same time like to working in a medical environment or with medical personnel, you may choose to do this course.

At UI Biomedical Engineering is available as a postgraduate -Professional Master of Engineering or Master of Science (MSc in Engineering)- programme. So, you cannot apply for this course until after you earned your first degree which must be BSc, BEng, BTech in any related Engineering programme or in Science, Medicine, Vetenary Medicine, Dentistry or Clinical Sciences with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower.

Higher National Diploma (HND) holders are also accepted. But must be in related engineering programmes with minimum of Lower Credits.

But you should bear in mind that presently, not many universities in Nigeria do either Biomedical Science or Biomedical Engineering as a programme but Medical Laboratory Science.
