While many believe they are same, some experts believe they are different in the scope of their work. Below are how both are defined according to the work they do.
Biomedical Engineering: is a field of engineering science which apply biological and engineering principles to the design, produce, maintain, calibrate and operate medical equipment and devices used in healthcare centres.
While,
Bioengineering: focus their work on the application of Biological Science and Engineering principle on living structures in growing of tissue, creating of artificial limbs, synthesis chemical and developing new drugs.
University of Pretoria don't do Bioengineering at undergraduate degree level but at post graduate levels:
- BEng (Honour): 1 year full time
- Master of Engineering (MEng) 1 year full time and
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 2 years full time
Honour is designed to build nesccesary foundation for research work when studying for MEng.
University of Pretoria says,
"Before being allowed to register for ANY postgraduate studies in Bioengineering, prospective students are required to discuss their plans with the Group Head. Honours or Masters students can only enrol for Bioengineering with permission from the Group Head and with a supervisor for the Masters degree research having been identified. PhD students can only enrol for a PhD in Bioengineering with permission from the Group Head and with a promotor for the PhD having been identified."
