ABU Zaria Mechanical Engineering and Entry Requirements

Mechanical Engineering is one of the pioneer engineering programmes at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria. The subject is being taught since 1962 when the Faculty of Engineering was established.

Mechanical Engineering Departments ABU Zaria was formed with aim to raise engineers capable of facing and finding solutions to myriad of the challenging Nigeria and importantly Africa is facing by  the application of engineering and technology principles and knowledge acquired through the course of their 5 years training. 

Studying Mechanical Engineering at ABU equipped students with the ability to research, design, construct, fabricate and produce machines of various sizes and shapes useful in solving some of these challenges.

The least entry requirements to study for an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering programme at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria are listed below.

Note: application to study  undergraduate Mechanical Engineering programmes at ABU is either as JAMB/UTME candidates or DIRECT ENTRY candidates.

JAMB/UTME Candidates (O/Level Result)

Students must have at least five (5)  O/L credit passes in:
  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry and any of the 
  • Biology
  • Agricultural Science
  • Technical Drawing
  • Further Mathematics
  • Geography
  • Data Processing
  • Metal Work
  • Economic 
The result must not be at more than two (2) sittings.

JAMB University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
Students must sit for, pass and make the cut off mark for UTME. The UTME subject combination to study Mechanical Engineering at ABU Zaria are:
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • English Language and 
  • Chemistry
ABU Zaria Post ITME Test.
Students must also sit for and pass ABU Zaria post UTME examination making the cut off mark for the Department of Mechanical Engineering..

Post UTME subjects combination is same as for the JAMB/UTME.

DIRECT Entry Candidates

  • Two (2) Advance Level (A/L)/IJMB in Physic, Mathematics and Chemistry to be considered to 200 level of Mechanical Engineering
  • National Diploma (ND): Upper Credit in Mechanical Engineering to be considered to 200 level.
  • HND Mechanical Engineering, minimum of Lower Credits or other relevant Engineering programmes to be considered for admission to 300 level.
Mechanical Engineering at ABU is a 5 years programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) on successful completion of the study. The programme is fully accredited by Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
