While many universities and other higher institutions of learning around the world offer Metallurgical and Materials Engineering as a single programme, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) offers each as a separate engineering programmes. Therefore, there is BEngTech Metallurgical Engineering and there is BEngTech Materials Engineering (Polymer Technology) at the Institution.
While Material Engineering covers the metallic and non-metallic (ceramics, polymers and composites) materials, Metallurgical focus only on the metallic engineering materials. And so, it could be said that Metallurgical Engineering is an element of Materials Engineering or Science.
Metallurgical Engineering involves the studying and processing of metals with aim to improve both their physical and chemical properties.
Studying BEngTech Metallurgical Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) lasted a duration of three (3) years and the programme is fully accredited by Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
Minimum Entry Requirements to Study BEngTech Metallurgical Engineering

Senior Certificate Obtained Before 2008:
- Senior Certificate with a C symbol at Standard Grade or a D symbol at Higher Grade for English, and B symbols at Standard Grade or C symbols at Higher Grade for Mathematics and Physical Science.
Applicants must have Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 28 to be considered for admission
National Senior Certificate Obtained In OR After 2008:
- A National Senior Certificate with a degree endorsement, with an achievement level of at least 4 for English (home language or first additional language) and 5 for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, and 5 for Physical Sciences or Technical Sciences.
An applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS)
of at least 28 (excluding Life Orientation) to be considered for admission using this qualification
National Certificate (VOCATIONAL) At NQF Level 4:
- Applicants must present a result with at least a 60% (APS of 5) for Mathematics and Science, 50% (APS of 4) for English, 50% for Life Orientation (excluded for APS calculation), and 60% (APS of 5) for any other three compulsory vocational subjects.
Applicants who will be considered for admission must have an Admission Point Score (APS)
of at least 28 (excluding Life Orientation).
National N Certificate/National Senior Certificate: N3 (NQF Level 4):
- Applicants using this qualification must have at least 50% for English, Mathematics N3, Engineering Sciences N3 and any other two additional subjects.
Applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 28 to be considered for admission.
National N6 Certificate in A Related Engineering Field:
- A N6 Certificate in a related Engineering field with an average of at least 60% for the qualification, and successful completion of an English Language Proficiency Assessment (done by the University).
Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework (HEQSF) Offered By University Of Technology:
The applicant who will be considered for admission must have completed one of the underlisted programmes:
- Higher Certificate in Metallurgical Engineering (NQF Level 5 - 140 credits): with an average of at least 60% for the qualification.
- Advanced Certificate in Metallurgical Engineering (NQF Level 6 - 140 credits): with an average of at least 60% for the qualification.
- Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering (NQF Level 6 - 280 credits): with an average of at least 55% for the qualification.
- National Diploma: Engineering: Metallurgy (NQF Level 6 - 3,000 credits): with an average of at least 55% for the qualification.
