This was disclosed by the Research Fellows Ambassador at the University of Ibadan, Professor Oluwatoyin Odeku during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor K. O. Adebowale.
According to Professor Odeku, the Foundation will be holding a Conference at the University of Ibadan to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day with focus on capacity building programmes.
Tagged “Empowering Women in Academia”, the Conference will take participants to secondary schools to promote female inclusion with the aim of catching them young.
In her remark during the visit to the Vice-Chancellor, the African Programme Director and member of the Sponsorship Division of the Foundation, Dr. Charlotte Baeumi also bemoaned the low participation by female researchers. She reiterated the need to intensify efforts to encourage and inspire them to access the Fellowships made available by the Foundation.
Speaking through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, innovation and Strategic Partnership), Professor Oluyemisi Bamgbose, the Vice-Chancellor lamented the low female participation in accessing fellowship despite the fact that they continue to take the lead and excel in Research, receiving awards and accolades.
She affirmed the need to inspire women to participate more in research and emphasized the need to “Catch them Young”. She was full of commendation for the Research Fellows for their resolve to reach out to girls in secondary schools.
She commended the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation for being one of the most proactive bodies in promoting research and particularly supporting researchers from the University of Ibadan.
The Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation is a Germany based foundation which promotes international cooperation between scientists and scholars both in Germany and overseas. This it does through the provision of doctoral fellowships for Post-Doctoral and experienced researchers of all nationalities and research areas.
The Conference which hold this month will bring other Humboldt Foundation research fellows (fondly called Humboldtians) from mother Universities in Nigeria and abroad.
