Professor Adebowale spoke through the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Bayeroju while receiving a 22-man accreditation team for the MBBS/BDS programmes from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria recently.
She affirmed that the University of Ibadan has the best medical school in Nigeria, which it continually seeks to improve on, and therefore, would never consider accreditation as witch-hunting, but rather, a way of improving the programmes through constant checks by outsiders to determine areas of strength and those that need to be improved on.
She acknowledged the need to train more Medical Doctors for the nation, given the high rate of attrition of medical practitioners from Nigeria, and affirmed that there was no better university to take on this challenge than the University of Ibadan, given the thoroughness and quality of medical education in the university.
She expressed great pleasure in receiving the 22-man accreditation team and promised to support and cooperate with them as they run through the accreditation process.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the team and Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. T.A.B. Sanusi highlighted the need for constant regulation in the medical profession, given its sensitivity and the high level of risks involved. He assured that the accreditation exercise was to look at the curriculum and facilities of the programmes in order to eliminate shortcomings and appreciate excellence. He promised that the exercise would be done without fear or favour. Dr. Sanusi also stated that the team would look into the possibility of the UI medical school taking on more students given its pedigree and make appropriate recommendations in order to meet the critical need for medical personnel in the nation.
Other members of the team from MDCN included Prof. E.J.C. Nwana, Prof K.E.O. Nkangwiene, Prof. M.M. Borode, Prof. Demola Olaitan, Prof. Dilli Dogo, Prof Akin Osibogun, Prof Ibrahim Abdu-Aguye, Prof Uchena Nwagha, Prof Adolphus O. Loto, Prof. Tajudeen Olasinde, Prof Oladepo Shittu and Prof Atoe Kenneth.
The team also included Prof N, Mike Ibeabuchi, Prof. Micheal A. Adedigba, Prof Benjamin O. Bolaji, Prof Osawe Omoregie, Prof Oluranti O. DaCosta, Mr Daniel Tyoubulba, Mr David I. Omoregie and Mr. Bello Misbahu.
At hand to receive the Accreditation team were the Principal Officers and stakeholders from the University of Ibadan particularly from the College of Medicine.
