Clemson University Becomes First Ever to Award BS Degree in Automotive Engineering in US

Clemson University has made history by graduating first ever Bachelor of Science degree in Automotive Engineering in United States and to the university community this is a great achievement which was mark by engraving the names of the first four students to be awarded the degree in a brick pathway at CU-ICAR.

Clemson University officially launched its automotive engineering as a graduate degree program with the establishment of the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) and the enrollment of it's first cohort students in 2006. This initiative marked the start of graduate-level education (M.S. and Ph.D. programs) specifically focused on automotive engineering, emphasizing collaboration with industry partners like BMW, Michelin, and others.

While undergraduate automotive-related coursework may have existed within Mechanical Engineering at other colleges and universities in US, the automotive engineering at Clemson University is the first and the only (at least for now) that exist as a major and is part of CU-ICAR's mission to advance automotive research and education.

While Clemson University may have awarded thousands of graduate degrees in Automotive Engineering it only started accepting students for Bachelor of Science degree in 2022 and so most of the first undergraduate cohort will graduate at ceremonies later this year or early 2026

It was reported that these four which were being honored were students who accelerated their path by applying previously earned credits and completing required senior-level courses early, becoming the first to finish the undergraduate program.

The names of the four graduating students as published by Clemson University are:

  • Garrison Bishop (Spartanburg, SC)
  • Matthew Flaim (Yorktown Heights)
  • Trevor Levine (Irmo, SC) and
  • Colin Luongo (Oxford, GA)
It is believe  that the brick-laying ceremony not only honored these students’ individual achievements, but also to celebrated Clemson’s pioneering role in shaping the next generation of automotive engineers and leaders.
