The reason why the state parade so few number of universities is not known but the huge number of the tertiary institutions in the state which is said to be eight in Nigeria as per it Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could be attributed to it early acceptance of Western Education. It was said that the region which is now called Akwa Ibom State got it first established educational institution as far back as 1875.
