There are eight (8) government approved polytechnics in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. 

Akwa Ibom State is part of the South-South states in Nigeria. It was created in 1987 by the then military government of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. When the state was created it was without a single polytechnic. The state was unlike many states which inherited polytechnic school from the state from which they were carved out.

The first polytechnic to be established in Akwa Ibom State was in 1991, four years after the creation of the state and the decision to create the polytechnic was taken just immediately after the state was formed. After the establishment of the first polytechnic, it took Akwa Ibom six good years to have another polytechnic.

By 2016 the state was able to have seven functioning polytechnics located in some of it important cities and towns. Uyo, the State capital have just one polytechnic located in it, while the remaining six polytechnics are located in other towns and cities of the state, this in order to bring polytechnic education nearer to the doorstep of the state's indigenes and to develop the town in which each polytechnic are located.

Private sector are well represented in the business of providing polytechnic education in Akwa Ibom. From the seven existing polytechnic in the state four are run by private organisations, while the other three are run by government. The private bodies are able to participate in providing polytechnic education in the state just some years after the bills that authorized them were passed into law.

The first private polytechnic in Akwa Ibom was established in 2010 and within six years three more were established.

Polytechnic education in Akwa Ibom is grown day by day in innovation, offering of more courses and investing in modern facilities and state of art technology.

Below is the list of all existing poltechnics in Akwa Ibom State.

  • Federal Polytechnic, Ukana (Federal Government)
  • Akwa Ibom State College of Art and Science, Ukim (State)
This institution was established by the Akwa Ibom State government  2014. It is the second polytechnic to the established in the state. The school stated with seven courses at inception
  • Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Ekpeme (State)
This is the first Akwa Ibom State government ND and HND award institution. The school was founded in 1991 four years after the state was created. Official commissioning of the polytechnic was performed in 1992. On commissioning, the school started with just fifteen programmes and 961 students.
  • Heritage Polytechnic, Ikot (Private)
The first private polytechnic ever to be established in Akwa Ibom in 2010. This polytechnic offers eight programmes accross all departments.
  • Sure Foundation Polytecxhnic, Ikot Akai (Private)
It was established in 2016 six years after the first polytechnic was created. The polytechnic is NBTE and FME approved.
  • Trinity Polytechnic, Uyo (Private
The school like Sure Foundation was established in 2016. It runs sixteen OND programmes at it permanent site in Uyo.
  • Uyo City Polytechnic, Uyo (Private)
Started in 2014 with six department.
