UNILAG: Professor Ogundipe Innovation Challenge 2019 Ends With Team Solution Emerged Winner

This year (2019) maiden edition of Professor Ogundipe Innovation Challenge (POIC) has come to an end. The programme which is an initiative of the Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos attracted more than 500 applicants  from a numbers of universitites accross the country.

POIC was created to encourage and to support scientific creativities among the university students, the kind of ideas which can help solve some of the problems in the country.

At the event, Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe who is the  initiator of the competition said the university under his stewardship is committed to promoting innovation. He said a time is coming when he would register a limited liability company which will commercialise all our students marketable innovations. The Vice Chancellor then use the opportunity to appreciate Prof. Abass who he said he was the one who introduced him to the service of University of Lagos in 1990.

This year event saw eleven teams qualified for the final stage of the competition among whom the winner of competition emerged.

Team Elabtech showcase a smoke purifier which when attached to a electric generator will make the emitted smoke carbon II oxide free.

Team Skyline  presented an industrial  water purifier which work by using chitosan  phosphate hybrid plant.

Team Nupe Project  showcase a medical device, an ultrasound machine which can help reduce issues with a baby in the womb.

Team Loud Mind showcased exhaust purifier which can trap  carbon II oxide in the smoke and at the same time convert it to carbon fiber which can be used in the automobile rubber spare parts.

Team Solution presented a security solution device, an anti theft alarm designed to safeguard valuable properties from been stolen  and which can also help security agencies by authenticating distressed call.

Team Brickify show case an idea of a brick made from recycled plastic waste to provide a low cost building and construction projects and which also can be dis-assembled if house owner want to relocate.

Team Zeena on their own focus it idea on the area of Liqidfied  Natural Gas (LPG) when they showcased an internet enable application which can help monitor gas usage at home and in industries.

Team BSF (Black Soldiers Fly) innovated a way by which black soldiers fly could be used in organic waste recycling and thereby alter nature dietary source for animal feed.

Team Problack created a decentralised energy distribution system which can help solved Nigeria energy need.

Team Veta  (Vocational Education Transforming Africa) designed an online platform to engage in vocational and technical skill training. And

Team Blip present an Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is capable of detecting lie during interrogation in criminal investigation in the current industry standard.

At the end of the presentation of all the innovations, the jugdes with the help of votes from people at the event saw Team Solution Emerged Winner of this year (2019) maiden edition of Professor Ogundipe Innovation Challenge (POIC). The first runner up was Team Veta while the second runner up was Team Brickify.

Each of the winners at POIC went home with cheque of N1 million.

This year POIC which was held at Jelili Omotola Hall on the UNILAG campus was well attended by the university communities and invited guests.

Among the University of Lagos management team we were able to recognise at the event were: Professor Lucian Chuckwu, Director of Academic Planning; Professor Grace Otinwa, Director of Quality Assurance and Servicom; Oladepo Azeez Esq, Registrar; Mr. Lekan Lawal, Bursar and Dr. Yetunde Zaid, UNILAG Librarian.
