The programme has to do with designing, building, maintaining and repairing of all sea transport systems - including ship, trawler, boat, underwater craft, tankers, aircraft carrier and others - offshore platforms and drilling equipment use by oil exploration companies on the sea. Marine engineering go along with Naval Architecture that is why in some foreign countries the programme is run as Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture. There are just six (6) universities in Nigeria, at the time of putting up this post, that offer Marine Engineering as a programme and the universities are located in Niger-Delta and South Eastern part of the country.
The universities are listed below and they are:
- Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State
- Akwa Ibom State University, Akwa Ibom
- Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt
- Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta State
- University of Benin (UNIBEN)
The programme at all these listed universities lasted for a duration of 5 years (10 Semesters) at undergraduate level and it lead to the award of Bachelor of Technology (BTech) or Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Marine Engineering, depending on the university. For example it is BTech at River State University but BEng at Niger Delta University and while the former university run Marine Engineering course at all level of degree programmes (Bachelor, Master's and Doctorate) the latter offers the programme only at undergraduate degree level.
National University Commission (NUC) approved the four universities above to run the programme while Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria COREN accredited each university marine engineering peogramme.
For a student to be considered for admission to undergraduate degree through UTME (1) above, he must have five credit passes from either
A student must also pass Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) after which he must also pass the post UTME of any of the university he want to attend for the course making the required Cut-Off Mark.
It is also required of a student to pass one of the three exam school certificate examination above before he could be considered for an admission by direct entry.

There are two ways by which an applicant can gain admission to study any of the above courses in as much as he satisfy the admission requirements.
- Through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this include Pre-degree programme which qualify students to be admitted to 100 level and
- Through Direct Entry, including JUPEB which qualifies student to be admitted to 200 level.
- West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
- Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)/(NECO)
- General Certificate Examination (GCE)

Work Opportunities
Marine Engineering graduate can work in ship building companies and at port. They have job among the military especially naval military. Their work is also valuable to oil exploration companies and they are usually members of crew aboard ship and in that situation they will get job working for shipping companies.Share This
