Without beating around the bush, you should be told that UNILAG don't do a course know as Computer Engineering but a Computer Science. And that is why it is not listed among the engineering courses on offer in the school.
This may sound confused but you should hold your breath and read more to gain an insight into what make the difference between the two programmes and see why UNILAG is doing Computer Science rather than Computer Engineering. It will also help you in deciding the career path to choose between the two.
Computer Engineering:
The experts in the field of computer science and engineering describe computer engineering as a field of study which deal with knowing everything about the hardware and software part of a computer system. It is a field of engineering which study and know how microprocessor work, how electronics components within a computer system operate to process instructions, how data communicate among electronics components and how software is written, assembled and optimized.
Computer Engineers understand software design, computer hardware design and maintenance and they are able to design systems to integrate them. In short timehey are able to build computer from scratch up. Most Computer Engineers understand Electrical Engineering and that is why in many universities Computer Engineering programme is in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Computer Science
This is what UNILAG do as a course. It deal majorly with data. It is the study of how data and instruction are store, process and communicate by computer system.
Computer scientist must be good in mathematics because they constantly apply mathematical and scientific knowledge to develop how to process, interprete, store and secure millions of millions of data in a computer system. They are the ones that design algorithms for data processing.
