FUTA is among few number of  the Universities in South West where Mining Engineering is taught. If you are planning to study this programme, think FUTA especially if you are not ready to go east where many of the universities there run the programme.

FUTA is teaching Mining Engineering to train students and equipped them with necessary skills required to perform effectively and efficiently in the mining industry and thereby developing the sector.

Mining Engineering is a five years programme at FUTA for those who gained admission through UTME. Direct Entry admitted students will spend fewer number of years depending on the qualification with which the admission was granted. By the time the students are graduating they must have acquired the academic and practical skill to properly operate in the area of surface mining, underground mining, mining management and mineral economic, rock mechanics, mineral processing, mine environment and safety and others.

To be awarded with a degree of Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng) in Mining Engineering, Federal  University of Technology, Akure, a student among many other things must complete 212 units (those admitted through UTME) and 165 units (students admitted through Direct Entry) and must obtain CGPA not lesser than 1.50.


Entry Requirements

Application to study Mining Engineering as a programme at FUTA is process in two different ways and they are as:

  • JAMB/UTME Candidates and 
  • Direct Entry Candidates

JAMB/UTME Candidates

Application as a JAMB/UTME candidate eligible an applicant admission to 100 level of the programme and the applicant must have credit passes in five (5) subjects from either one or two of these examination:
  • GCE or
  • WASSCE or
  • NECO/SSCE
The five subjects must include:
  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Physics
  • Chemistry and one other science subject, probably 
  • Biology
  • Technical Drawing
  • Further Mathematics
  • Agricultural Science 
These subjects combinations must not be more than at two sittings.

JAMB/UTME

The applicant must also write Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and make the required cut off mark.

Jamb/UTME subjects combination are:
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry and 
  • English Language

Federal University of Technology Akure Post UTME

After passing JAMB/UTME, the student must also write FUTA post UTME, making the cut off mark for the Department of Mining Engineering.

Pre Degree Engineering Programmes

FUTA Pre-degree programme is accepted to 100 level of the Mining Engineering. A student who have problem gaining admission through JAMB can take this route provided he/she satisfy O'Level minimum entry requirements.

Direct Entry Candidates

Students can process admission to study Mining Engineering at FUTA with the following qualifications
  • General Certificate of Education, Advance Level (GCE A/L): good passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry to be admitted to 200 level
  • National Diploma (ND): Minimum of Upper Credits in Mining Engineering or other relevant engineering programmes from government approved institution to be considered for admission to 200 level.
  • Higher National Diploma: holders of HND with Upper Credit may be considered for 300 level

The programme is approved by National University Commission (NUC) and accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
