TUT: BEngTech Materials Engineering Polymer Technology and Admission Requirements

There is always a need for new materials for the advancement of science and technology. As the world is growing, so also is engineering and technology and the need for better and sustainable materials for its advancement.

This called for demand for more material engineers who will be involved in the research, design and development of new, better, sustainable and cost effective materials for use in industries: be it pharmaceutical, aerospace, marine, petrochemical and so on. Material Engineers work on all forms of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers and composites) and will work directly as Design Engineers, Metallurgist, Products Development Engineers, Technical Sale Engineers, Research Scientists and more, actively involve in the selection of raw materials to the selling of final products.

Studying BEngTech Material Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) equipped students with basic skills and knowledge needed to take up any challenging job in the area of the discipline which lasted a duration of three (3) years and accredited by Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

Senior  Certificate Obtained Before 2008: 

  • A Senior Certificate with with a minimum of C symbol at Standard Grade or a D symbol at Higher Grade for English, and B symbols at Standard Grade or C symbols at Higher Grade for Mathematics and Physical Science. 
For an applicant  to be considered for an admission using this qualification he must have an Admission Point Score (APS)
of at least 28.
 

National Senior Certificate Obtained In OR After 2008:

  • A National Senior Certificate with an achievement level of at least 5 for Mathematics and Technical Mathematics 4 for English (home language or first additional language) and 5 for Physical Sciences or Technical Sciences. 
To be considered for admission an applicant must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 28 (excluding Life Orientation). 

National Certificate (VOCATIONAL) At NQF Level 4

  • A National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF Level 4, with at least a 60% (APS 5) for Mathematics and Science, 50% (APS of 4) for English, 50% for Life Orientation (excluded for APS calculation), and 60% (APS of 5) 60% (APS of 5) for any other three compulsory vocational subjects.
For an applicant to be considered for an admission using this qualification he must have an Admission Point Score (APS) 
of at least 28 (excluding Life Orientation). 

National N Certificate/National Seniir Certificate:

  • A National Senior Certificate or a National N Certificate with languages as published in report 191: N3 (NQF Level 4)  with at least 50% for English, Engineering Sciences N3, Mathematics N3 and any other two additional subjects.

An applicant must have an Admission Point Score (APS) 
of at least 28 in order to be considered for admission

N6 Certificate In A Related Engineering Fields.

  • A N6 Certificate in a related Engineering field as published in Report 191: N6  must be with an average of at least 60% for the qualification, and successful completion of an English Language Proficiency Assessment (done by the University).

Tshwane University of Technology's Department of Material Engineering will offer an applicant an admission to the programme, if any of the following qualifications has been completed:
  • Higher Certificate in Materials Engineering in Polymer Technology (NQF Level 5 - 140 credits): with an average of at least 60% for the qualification. 
  • Advanced Certificate in Materials Engineering in Polymer Technology (NQF Level 6 - 140 credits): with an average of at least 60% for the qualification. 
  • Diploma in Materials Engineering in Polymer Technology (NQF Level 6 - 280 credits): with an average of at least 55% for the qualification. 
  • National Diploma: Polymer Technology (NQF Level 6 - 3,000 credits): with an average of at least 55% for the qualification.
