On this page is details of what it is to study for a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Honour degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). This details include the entry requirements for the Secondary School Certificate Holders and the Direct Entry applicants plus the O'level and JAMB/UTME subjects combination for the programme.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nigeria was founded in 1961 as a result of cooperations with the Michigan State University under USAID agreement and the Dutch government which provided Technical Assistance in the core academic, provision of senior technical staff, building and equipping the workshop for practical training of the students.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Nigeria Nsukka regularly invent in latest education facilities and state of art workshop equipments to train students and thereby be abreast of new technologies in the at area of Mechanical Engineering discipline. 

Much emphasis are laid on practical teaching of the students and regular industrial attachment to broaden students knowledge and most importantly to see how things are done in the real world.

Admission Requirements

Admissions are granted students to study Mechanical Engineering at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) through either:

  • Ordinary Level (O'level) or
  • Direct Entry 

O'level Application

Secondary School Certificate Holders

To apply to study for BEng Mechanical Engineering at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) using Ordinary Level results, an applicant must pass five subjects at credit level which must include:

  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Chemistry
  • Physics and any one of 
  • Technical Drawing
  • Pure Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Geography
  • Agricultural Science

The five (5) credit passes must not be at more than two sittings from either one or two of the:

  • West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or
  • Senior School Certificate Examination or
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) 


JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination

Having met the O'level minimum entry requirements to study for BEng Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, an applicant must sit for, pass and make the JAMB/UTME cut off mark.


JAMB Subjects Combination

  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry and
  • English Language

University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Post UTME

Applicant must also participate in the University of Nigeria Nsukka coordinated Post UTME, making the cut off mark for the Department of Mechanical  Engineering.


UNN Pre Degree Programme

UNN will consider applicant who have participated in it's Pre-Degree programme for admission to study Mechanical Engineering provided the applicant make the required points of mark plus the O'level minimum entry requirements.

Ordinary Level (O'level) and Pre-Degree programme qualified an applicant a placement to 100 level of the programme.


DIRECT Entry Applications

Holder of the following qualifications will be considered for admission to 200 level or 300 level of the Mechanical Engineering at UNN.

GCE A/L: Good passes in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry

National Diploma (ND): Upper Credit in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering programmes from government approved institution.

Higher National Diploma (HND): Upper Credit in Mechanical or other relevant engineering programmes qualify an applicant to 300 level of the programme.

Mechanical Engineering at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is a five years degree programme for those admitted to 100 level leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering after successful completion of the programme.

The programme is approved by the National University Commission (NUC) and fully accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)
