A UNIABUJA Professor of Science Education Engaged by UBEC

A University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) Professor, Katcha Mohammed Abdullahi has been engaged by the Universal Basic Education Commission ( UBEC) as Lead Researcher for the North-Central zone of a project on managing school absenteeism in Nigeria.

Professor Katcha, who is the current Director of University of Abuja Institute of Education, and a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), is a professor of Science Education. 

The research titled "Managing School Absenteeism for Basic Education Delivery in Nigeria: An Evidence - based Paradigm," will involve identifying, mapping and characterising sources/factors of absenteeism, as well as examining the challenges and implications of absenteeism to education at basic, national and global levels. It will also provide strategies for managing absenteeism and recommend best practices in line with local, national and international standards. 

In a letter dated 9th February 2021, and signed by the Deputy Executive Secretary ( Technical) Dr Bala Zakari for the Executive Secretary, UBEC, Katcha's selection "for this critical assignment is as a result of his wealth of experience in the research area as well as his contributions to the development of education in Nigeria."

Prof. Katcha told University of Abuja Bulletin that he was excited about the engagement as it's an opportunity for him to contribute to national development.
