Google Inc. yesterday announced a grant of fifty million dollar ($50 million) to ten Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across USA.The 10 HBCUs receiving funds as posted on the Google blog are:
- Claflin University, S.C.
- Clark Atlanta University, Ga.
- Florida A&M University
- Howard University, D.C
- Morgan State University, Md.
- NC A&T State University, N.C.
- Prairie View A&M University, Texas
- Spelman College, Ga.
- Tuskegee University, Ala.
- Xavier University, La.
Each of the universities will get a one time $5 million grant part of the Google largest ever endowment grant channel toward the development of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in U.S.
According to Google the investments is meant to strengthen the diverse communities and their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
While commenting on the grants, Melonie Parker, Google chief diversity officer says, "The grant reflects the company’s commitment to diversity, especially in the tech industry."
She said, "I am delighted to provide our HBCU partners with a $50 million unrestricted grant. These institutions are actively shaping the next generation of Black leaders and are helping build a more diverse workforce across all industries. This investment further solidifies our commitment to providing access and opportunities for underrepresented groups in tech.”
The grant will help the beneficiary HBCUs to put in place technological infrastructure, finance scholarships, creat career readiness and to develop curriculum.
