University of Calabar is among the few universities in Nigeria that award a degree on Computer Engineering and not the computer science.

The course is about integration of computer science with electronic engineering to develop hardware and software parts of the system. This is one of the reasons why the course is offers as Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at some universities.

At University of Calabar, students are taught how the computer electronic parts (hardware) are designed, developed and are working in relation to one another and with the system software, awarding Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree at the end of the studies.

Listed below are the minimum entry requirements accepted by the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Calabar (UNICAL). This include for the O'level and direct entry applicants and the JAMB subjects combination.


Minimum Entry Requirements (O'level Holders)

The Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Calabar (UNICAL) accept minimum of credit passes from five subjects which must include: 

  • Mathematics 
  • Physics 
  • Chemistry  
  • English Language plus 
  • One other science subjects  

The five subjects must not be more than at two sittings from:
  • WASSCE 
  • NECO/SSCE
  • GCE O'level and 
  • NABTEB

In addition to the above, an O'level applicant must sit for, pass and make the cut off mark for the JAMB coordinated UTME and University of Calabar post-UTME test.

JAMB Subjects Combination

  • Mathematics 
  • Physics 
  • Chemistry and 
  • English Language

The subjects combination is valid for the Department of Computer Engineering courses post UTME test.


Direct Entry Minimum Admission  Requirements 

Department of Computer Engineering accept the following minimum qualifications for admission to 100 level. 

  • National Diploma (ND): minimum of upper credit
  • JUPEB:  good points in Physics Chemistry Mathematics 
  • GCE A/Level: at least three pass grades from Mathematics Physics and Chemistry 
  • Higher National Diploma (HND): minimum of lower credit.  
  • Plus O'level result as stated above. 

Computer Engineering at the University of Calabar is a five (5) years degree course leading to the award of BEng. The course is duly accredited by COREN and the NUC.
