There are two courses offered at some universities in South Africa that are being confused with Marine Engineering and they are: Maritime Studies and Nautical Science.

Note: all have to do with sea activities.

While Marine Engineering is about the study, design, development, maintenance and operation of ocean and sea machines (ship, watercrafts, autonomous underwater vehicles and so on) and structures like oil and gas production platform, Maritime Studies is all about the economic and business side of the ocean and sea world while Nautical Science is about the direction and navigation on sea.

At school of higher learning, Marine Engineering is always part of the Faculty of Engineering, Maritime Studies is usually group under the Faculty of Humanities or Management and that why it is sometimes refer to as Maritime Management while Nautical Science is purely in the Faculty of Science.
