The National University Commission (NUC) has given the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) permission to start offering three undergraduate engineering programmes in BEng Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, BEng Agricultural Engineering and BEng Architectural.

This revelation was made when the institution through it's Acting Director, Information and University Relations, Habib Yakoob, was responding to an allegation from the Council of the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) that UNIABUJA was running some unaccredited engineering programmes.

In his remark Yakoob stated that the allegation made by COREN was misleading and was an attempt by the organisation to tarnish the image of the institution.

While he did not deny their institution was running unaccredited engineering programmes, Yakoob however tried to defend why the situation was so by pointing to the outbreak of COVID-19 and ASUU strike action among many other things that make them to not able to renew the accreditation status of the said engineering programmes in due time.

Mr. Yakoob stated that the institution is never in a position to shy away from allowing government agencies responsible for regulation of education and other professions including engineering to assess their facilities for any programme approval or accreditation when they know the important of the exercise.

He then revealed that the allegation made by the COREN was coming at the time the National University Commission (NUC) was just approving Architectural Science, Aeronautical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering for them, having assessed the available human resources and the facilities to start the programmes with.

He said, the three engineering programmes were part of the twenty six programmes presented by the university during resource verification exercise of the NUC. Mr. Yakoob said, for them to present so much programmes for verification and got all of them approved is no mean feat.

The Acting Director, Information and University Relations added further by saying, the University of Abuja acknowledges the importance of accreditation as a means to ensuring that their engineering graduates meet the necessary professional qualifications and standards so as to be recognized for job placement or for further study at other higher institutions of learning after graduation.
