The commendation was made in the wake of the outstanding performance of UI students at the Nigerian Law school, which has seen Miss Aminat Lawal of the University emerge as the best graduating student, with 27 others also graduating with first class division and 62 graduating with second class upper division.
The Guest Lecturer, who is also an Ambassador of the University at 75, made this commendation while on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. K. O. Adebowale, mni, FAS. He particularly appreciated his lecturers while in school, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnership), Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose SAN, who represented the Vice Chancellor at the event.
The Learned Silk, who was in the University to present the first Alumni Lecture of the Faculty of Law, entitled: “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of the Legal Profession”, expressed great pride at being an alumnus of the great citadel of learning, particularly with the strides that the University has continued to take in the education sector, in spite of its many challenges.
The legal luminary, who identified with the challenges of poor funding in Nigerian federal institutions, not only promised his continued support to his faculty and alma mater as a whole, but also promised to encourage other Alumni to do the same.
The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof J.O.A. Akintayo while speaking during the visit, acknowledged that the day was a historic one for the faculty, being the day that its first Alumni Lecture was being held, and also the call to bar of its students who performed outstandingly at the Nigerian Law School, making their Alma mater proud.
He stated that the Lecture would not only provide an opportunity to gain insight into the relevance of artificial Intelligence in the legal profession, but also the opportunity to have the alumni of the faculty come together for the first time in its forty years of existence.
Prof. Akintayo appreciated Mr. Abiodun for being a role model to students of the faculty, and for his many silent benefactions, including the provision of the chairs in the Lecture theatre where the lecture would be held.
In response, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnership) Professor Oluyemisi Bamgbose, who is also a former Dean of the Faculty of Law, commended the initiative of the Lecture, describing the theme as a topical one. She noted that Artificial intelligence is the transformative force in the world today, adding that the legal profession could not afford to be left out.
Prof. Bamgbose stated that the Lecture would also provide the room for alumni to network, and also, the opportunity for the faculty to harness what it has in terms of alumni, for mentoring and support.
She commended the UI @ 75 Ambassador and the Guest Lecturer of the day for having impacted not only his faculty, but also the University as a whole with his mentoring and philanthropic gestures. She called on other alumni to emulate him in supporting their alma mater.
Others who came on the visit included Engr Dare Bankole and Mr. Adedayo Abbas-Olisa from JUS Partners as well as stakeholders from the Faculty of Law.
