Condemnation Follows the Decision of Cardiff University to Scrap Music School

Widespread condemnation has followed the decision of the Cardiff University management to scrap the school music department which has been in existence since 1883.

This comes amidst report of imbalance in the account book of the institution and among many plan announced by the institution to save  money.

The decision not only affect the department of music but also the school of nursing; religion and theology; modern language and translation and ancient history.

While its international student applications continue dwindling, it was reported that in 2023 -24 academic calendar, the university had an operating deficit of £31.2m something they say would make the institution “run out of cash in four years” if an urgent step is not taken.

The move, however has been met with widespread condemnation as people including academics, union representative and students have seen it as too harsh, considering the implications on the teachers at Cardiff University and Welsh culture at large. The school of music was at the forefront of promoting Welsh culture through teaching of music and dancing.
