If you are an international student who has been hearing about engineering apprenticeships and the various benefits they offer participants in the United Kingdom (UK), but you are curious whether an international candidate can participate in the programme, then you are in the right place.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a programme designed for people aged 16 and over who are willing to expand their knowledge in their chosen profession while in paid employment in the UK.
This implies the following:
- Apprenticeships Scheme, as it is otherwise refers to, is opens to everyone, regardless of age and
- Apprentices must be employed.
- They must be in paid work.
- They must work for a recognised organisation.
- They must be working in the UK.
- Their employers must be based in the UK and pay them for the job.
The last two conditions mean that an international student or candidate cannot participate unless they are already working in the UK. A person cannot apply for the scheme while employed in another country.
The engineering apprenticeship scheme is strictly for UK residents, regardless of their country of origin, provided they meet the first three requirements.
Bottom line: International students from Japan, Kenya, Liberia, Sudan, Nigeria, China, Brazil, Pakistan, India, Iran, Congo, Russia, Cameroon, the USA, Canada, Australia, and other countries cannot participate in the scheme unless they relocate to the UK and secure paid employment.
Note: The apprenticeship scheme is not limited to engineering. It also covers other professions such as data analysis, human resources (HR), quantity surveying, customer service, business support, environmental practice, site management, and more.
The programme starts at a minimum age of 16 (for school leavers) at Level 2 and progresses through to degree-level apprenticeships at Level 6 and master’s degree level at Level 7.
