The story of polytechnics education in Edo State started with Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi. The polytechnic, one of the many polytechnics established in Nigeria by the federal government was founded in 1963, twenty-eight years before the creation of Edo State.

The polytechnic was formerly part of Old Bendel State but is inherited by Edo State when Bendel was split to Edo and Delta States.

Right now, Edo State parade five polytechnics, four of which were approved after the creation of the state in 1991.

Three of the polytechnics in Edo State belong to private organisations, one is owned by the state government with the fifth one, Federal Polytechnic, Auchi which happened to be the oldest is owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
