Students from Brazil, Pakistan, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Philippine, India, Indonesia, China and some other part of the world get admitted into many of the universities in Cyprus every years. It is believed that the number of International Students in the country has increase tremendously over the past few years.
One of the reasons attached to this, is that the International Students have come to realised that the education standard in Cyprus is very high and the university education in the country is well recognised by European member states and worldwide knowing that their programme of study is base on European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)
One of the things international students from the countries where English is not spoken as a second language want to know is whether they can be admitted to one of the universities in Cyprus without English proficiency test results like IELTS or not.
Let us start by saying that the language of instruction at any of the universities in Cyprus is either Greece, Turkey (mostly universities in Northern Cyprus) or English language.
The answer to the above is, there is none of the universities that give instruction in English Language that do not ask for English proficiency test results from international students. This is necessary to know the level of English proficiency of an international student whether high or low.
If a student can't provide IELTS proficiency exam certificate he has option to provide any of the English proficiency examinations result listed below. All the universities in Cyprus accept any of them.
Some Other Accepted English Proficiency Test Certificate.
- GCE O Level English with Grade C
- IGCSE. English with Grade C
- TOEFL many universities required score note lesser than 550 (computer base) and 92 (internet base)
- Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE): many universities will not accept scores lesser than 176.
- Cambridge English Advance (CAE): scores not lesser than 176 are mostly required.
- Certificate of Proficiency in English: score not lesser than 650
- Angila Examination Proficiency
- Michigan Examination of Proficiency
Note: if a student has already completed a programme in English Language, that student is assumed to be English proficient.
This is most applicable to those applying for postgraduate programmes
If an international student is unable to provide any of the listed English proficiency test certificate, another way round for him to get admission is to find a school which runs English Preparatory School.
English preparatory school runs by some universities in Cyprus is aim to improve the knowledge of international students in English Language both in speaking and writing. It usually take one or two years for the programme to be completed. But in a situation where a student did not pass within the stipulated period, there might be programme extension for him.
