A Nigerian Professor Was Charged to Court for Stealing University Properties

A Professor at the University of Portharcourt (UNIPORT'), Rivers State, Nigeria had been charged to court on an allegation that he was trying to steal the university properties worth N6000.

The Professor by the names Andrew Edemini and his mason whose names was not known at the press time were charged to court by the Management of UNIPORT for conspiring to steal three buckets of chippings and three slabs meant for the repairing of Professor quaters  within the institution premises.

The lawsuit which was heard before the magistrate court sitting in Choba community in Ohio Akpor  Local Government Area of Rivers State, accused the two defendants for trying to steal the materials which belong to the university thereby committing an offense punishable under the criminal code law of Rivers State.

At the sitting the two accused persons pleaded not guilty to the three count charge against them and they were thereafter granted bail to the tune of one hundred thousand naira (N100,000) by the Chief Magistrate Israel Agbaebor.

The case has since been adjourned till 11th, 13th, 29th of June and 9th, 21st and 30th of July 2020 for further hearing.

When interviewed, the counsel to the accused persons stated that the charges is misfire and therefore threating to institute a legal action against the Management of University of Portharcourt on the  developments.

Counsel to the UNIPORT' decline to comment on the matter.
