A 15-minutes drama film produced by a group of Witwatersrand University Film and TV students have been announced the Best Student Film at this year 14th South African Film and TV Award (SAFTA) which was held online due to the general lockdown in South Africa as a result of Covid-19 pandemic.
Moya a film which was produced to enlighten audiences how culture and religion inter relate and both in turn affect human soul, mind and spirit was announced winner of the Student Best Film category among many other categories of awards available on the 29th of April, 2020.
Moya which is interpreted to mean "SPIRIT" was shot late last year (2019) by a crew of final year Witwatersrand Film and TV students within a 7-days period on different location from around the Johannesburg.
Among the film production crew were Siyabonga Mbele, Writer and Director; Nombosu Mandela, Producer and Art Director; Stuart Young, Producer and Boitumelo Molalugi, Sound Designer and Recordist.
The crew believe the award is an evidence that what they were doing was appreciated and it encourage them to do more and better in the future especially when they start practicing as profesioners.
SAFTA was created in 2005 with a motive to celebrate, honour and develop new talents in the South African TV and Film Industry and to inspire the spirit of entrepreneuralship among them.
