Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO) is one of the many universities where petroleum engineering is taught as a programme in Nigeria and listed below are what it takes to study the programme at the university including the entry requirements for O'level and Direct Entry applicants plus the O'level and JAMB subjects combination.

Petroleum engineering is one of the highly rewarding disciplines in Nigeria and because of this many science students want to pursue the programme at higher education level. 

Studying Petroleum Engineering at Igbinedion University, Okada produce graduates with skill to contribute to the growth of the sector in Nigeria by ensuring the extraction of oil and gas in safe and efficient ways and in a cost effective manner.

The skill acquired during the course of study at Igbinedion University's Department of Petroleum will also able the graduate students to work with other engineers in the designing and development of the machines, plants and tools use in oil and gas extraction.

Petroleum Engineering at Igbinedion University is a five (5) years programme. A Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Petroleum Engineering is awarded to students on successful completion of the programme.


Admission Requirements

Candidates can seek admission to study for a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree in Petroleum Engineering at Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO) by:
  • Ordinary Level (O'level) or 
  • Direct Entry

Ordinary Level (O'level) Applicants

Ordinary Level candidates must have a minimum of credit pass from five subjects which must include:
  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Physics
  • Chemistry and one other science subjects which can be
  • Technical Drawing
  • Further Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Agricultural Science.
The five subjects must be earned at not be more than two sittings from one or two of the following O'level examinations:
  • West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE)
  • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)  or
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE)
  • NABTEB

JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Ordinary Level candidates must write JAMB coordinated Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and make the cut off mark.

JAMB Subjects Combination are:
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry and 
  • English Language

Post UTME Screening

Candidates must also participate in the Igbinedion University coordinated post UTME screening and make the cut off mark for the Department of the Petroleum Engineering.

Candidates going through ordinary level to seek for admission are admitted to 100 level of the programme.

Direct Entry Applicants

The following qualifications are accepted to apply for admission to study Petroleum Engineering through Direct Entry.

General Certificate of Education Advance Level (GCE A/L): Good passes in Physic, Mathematics and Chemistry.

National Diploma (ND) minimum of upper credit in Petroleum Engineering or other relevant engineering or science programmes.

University Diploma: a university diploma, minimum of credit is also accepted to study this programme.

IJMB: igbinedion University also accept IJMB with good grade.

JUPEB: is also accepted

Higher National Diploma (HND): upper credits in Petroleum Engineering or other relevant engineering disciplines.

Application to study Petroleum Engineering through direct entry eligible a candidate admission to 200 level of the programme. HND holders may be considered to 300 level.

The programme at Igbinedion University is fully accredited by the National University Commission (NUC) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)
