UNIBEN Petroleum Engineering and Entry Requirements

Petroleum Engineering is a field of engineering discipline that work on the exploration and production of hydrocarbons: natural gas and crude oil.

While the primary work of petroleum engineers is to find oil and gas, they are also engage in design process for exploration and production, they engage in research activities, consulting, marketing, and more.

The Department of Petroleum Engineering at University of Benin (UNIBEN) was formed in 1984 to produce graduates with adequate classroom and practical training, the type which will make them be able to face ever growing challenging in Oil and Gas industry.

Listed below are the minimum entry requirements accepted by the Department of Petroleum Engineering, University of Benin (UNIBEN) for it's undergraduate degree programme.


Minimum Entry Requirements

JAMB's UTME Candidates.

Students must have credit passes in five (5) O'level subjects which must include:

  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Chemistry and one of 
  • Biology
  • Technical Drawing
  • Agricultural Science
  • Geography
  • Further Mathematics or a
  • Relevant Trade Subjects
The five credit must be at not more than two sittings from one or two of:
  • West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE)
  • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE O'level)
  • National Technical Certificate (NTC)
O'level candidates must sit for, pass and make cut off mark for the JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and University of Benin (UNIBEN) Department of Petroleum Engineering post UTME cut off mark.

JAMB Subjects Combination

  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Direct Entry Applicants

The following qualifications are accepted to study for a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Petroleum Engineering, University of Benin (UNIBEN):

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE A'Level): passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
  • Higher National Diploma (HND): minimum of lower credit in relevant engineering/technology
  • National Diploma (ND): Minimum of Upper Credit in relevant engineering and technology courses
  • First Degree Holders: Minimum of Second Class Honour Degree in Chemical, Biochemical, Petrochemical, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy or Agriculture or Sciences.
  • Petroleum Training Institute: PTI  HND/ND in Chemical, Biochemical, Petrochemical, Petroleum and other relevant engineering courses.
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN) Diploma in Chemical, Petroleum Engineering, ICT, Computer Engineering or Maritime Studies with Merit Pass or from other accredited universities with upper credit.
Holder of HND with Upper Credit either from Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) or other accredited tertiary educational institution will be admitted to 300 level of the Petroleum Engineering while holders of other qualifications as stated above would be considered for admission into 200 level at the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

All direct entry applicants must have five credit passes as stated above.

Petroleum Engineering at University of Benin (UNIBEN) is a five (5) years courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree. 

The programme accredited by the Council of Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and National University Commission (NUC)
