UNIBEN Structural Engineering and Entry Requirements

University of Benin (UNIBEN) is the only university that offer Structural Engineering as a taught undergraduate engineering major in Nigeria.

The discipline is a branch of Civil Engineering but it focus on the design frames and other structures  that support, carry and form the shape of building and large non building structures.

Just like the Civil Engineering,  Structural Engineering is taught students that are admitted to 100 level for a minimum duration of five (5) years leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Structural Engineering.

Listed below are the admission requirements accepted by the Department of Structural Engineering, University of Benin (UNIBEN) for the undergraduate degree programme. This include the direct and O'level entry requirements plus JAMB and WAEC subject combination.


Minimum Entry Requirements

JAMB's UTME Candidates.

Students must have credit passes in five (5) O'level subjects which must include:

  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Chemistry and one of 
  • Biology
  • Technical Drawing
  • Agricultural Science
  • Geography
  • Further Mathematics or a
  • Relevant Trade Subjects
The five credit must be at not more than two sittings from one or two of:
  • West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE)
  • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE O'level)
  • National Technical Certificate (NTC)
O'level candidates must sit for, pass and make cut off mark for the JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and University of Benin (UNIBEN) Department of Structural Engineering post UTME cut off mark.

JAMB Subjects Combination

  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Direct Entry Applicants

The following qualifications are accepted to study for a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Structural Engineering, University of Benin (UNIBEN):

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE A'Level): passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
  • Higher National Diploma (HND): minimum of lower credit in relevant engineering/technology
  • National Diploma (ND): Minimum of Upper Credit in relevant engineering and technology courses
  • First Degree Holders: Minimum of Second Class Honour Degree in  Sciences and relevant engineering courses.
  • Petroleum Training Institute: PTI  HND/ND in Civil or Structural Engineering or other relevant engineering courses.
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN) Diploma in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering,or other relevant engineering courses with Merit Pass or from other accredited universities with upper credit.
Holder of HND with Upper Credit either from Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) or other accredited tertiary educational institution will be admitted to 300 level of the Structural Engineering while holders of other qualifications as stated above would be considered for admission into 200 level at the Department of Structural Engineering.

All direct entry applicants must have five credit passes as stated above.

Structural Engineering at University of Benin (UNIBEN) is accredited by the Council of Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and National University Commission (NUC)
