North West University, South Africa Plan to Build A Medical School

The North West University is considering building a new medical school thereby adding to the existing number of medical schools in South Africa.

If everything goes as planned, then the North West University Medical School would be the 11th in South Africa when completed.

A report from the university revealed that the first move to established a medical school was made back in 2006 but nothing much was done about it until the recent time. The devastating effects of Covid-19 pandemic have exposes the shortage in the availability of health workers. There is need for more medical personnel to be trained  and hence more medical school to be built.

Already the management of North West University has constituted a team to monitor the project. It was revealed that the team met with the provincial and representative of the federal government in March to map out how the project could be successfully executed taking into consideration the community health need and the cost associated with executing such a project.

Before now, questions had been raised about the high cost of building and running a medical school, but all the parties concern in the project believed and agreed that the need to train more medical personnel is more important than the cost of building a new medical school, at least for now.

Work is ongoing on how to get the cost of executing the project cut without having to sacrifice the standard of the school and the quality of training.

The work on the project is expected to start immediately the necessary paper work have been completed and needed approval granted by the provincial and the federal government.
