A degree in Software Engineering equipped graduates with the ability to design and develop programs (application software and system software) for computer.

Studying Computer Science or Computer Engineering or Information Engineering are some of the routes to become a professional software engineer.

A prospective students cannot apply to study for a degree in Software Engineering at Witwatersrand University. The institution don't award degree in the programme. Students can only apply to do Information Engineering, a discipline through which they are taught software engineering. 

Information Engineering at Wits University focus on three major area of study and they are: computer networking, software engineering and telecommunication. 

The programme is a four (4) years degree course on full time study mode, leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Information Engineering on successful completion. It is one of the engineering programmes at Faculty of Engineering, Built and Environment. It is taught in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering.

Listed below are the minimum qualification accepted by Wits University to study for the Information Engineering at undergraduate level.


Admission Rquirements: Holders of National Senior Certificate (NSC)

  • English Home Language or first additional language at the National Senior Certificate

Scale of Achievement : level 5

  • Physical Science 

Scale of Achievement: level 5

  • Mathematics

Scale of Achievement: level 5

  • APS: 42+ 


Admission Requirements: Holders of National Certificate Vocational (NCV)

University of Witwatersrand accept National Certificate Vocational Level 4 with the following grade:

  • English as Language of Learning and Teaching or as the First Additional language 

Scale of achievement : 70-79% (4) 

  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy

Scale of achievement: 70-79% (4)

  • Life Orientation

Scale of achievement: 70-79% (4)

 and 

  • Four (4) vocational subjects relevants to Information Engineering and each must be at the scale of achievement of 70-79% (4)

After having met the above four (4) requirements, NCV holders will be invited for an interview to be conducted by the relevant faculty and heads of school.


Admission to First Degree Holders

An applicant who has obtain a first degree of BSc or an equivalent is admitted to the third years of Information Engineering at Witwatersrand University. But such applicants must have achieved a qualification the management of the institution deemed enough to be admitted to study for a BSc in Information Engineering.
