Mechanical Engineering as a discipline design and build any working machines which include but not limited to aircraft, space station, ship, aircraft carrier, robot and machines that make machines. They work in group of other engineers to have better results in their work.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) teaches this course to develop engineers for the challenges of designing, developing and even maintain and repair this various machines when brake down. 

A mechanical engineer must be a great thinker, a person who is able to come out with great idea to solving myriad of problems in the society, mechanically.

Listed below are the minimum entry requirements to study for the undergraduate degree, Mechanical Engineering at University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), and this include the O'level and direct entry requirements plus the WAEC and JAMB's UTME subjects combination.


O'level or UTME Entry Requirements

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, UNILORIN accept five credit passes at not more than two sittings from one or two of the following:
  • West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
  • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE O'level) or
  • NABTEB.

WAEC or O'Level Subjects Combination

Five O'level credit passes must be from:
  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Chemistry
  • Physics and one of
  • Biology
  • Technical Drawing
  • Further Mathematics
  • Agricultural Science
  • Geography
  • Economics
O'level UTME candidates must sit for, passed and make JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and UNILORIN coordinated post-UTME cut off mark 

JAMB/UTME Subjects Combination

  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Direct Entry Minimum Entry Requirements

The Deparment of Mechanical Engineering will consider the holders of the following higher qualifications to the 200 or 300 level.

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE A'Level) with good pass in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry
  • A'evel IJMB with pass in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry with a minimum of 10 points.
  • National Diploma (ND) with Upper Credit in relevant discipline (Biomedical Engineering Technology, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Technology and Mechatronics  Engineering Technology) with at least one year post diploma experience.
  • First Degree from Physical Sciences at Second Class Lower Division.
  • Higher National Diploma (HND)  in relevant Engineering discipline as above  at Distinction or Upper Credits level from recognized Polytechnic or other higher institutions of learning.
  • First Degree Honours in other Engineering disciplines.

Holders of ND, GCE A'Level, A'Level IJMB and First Degree Second Class Lower are admitted to 200 level while holders of other higher qualifications as stated above are admitted to 300 level of the programme.

Note: all direct entry applicants must possess O'level minimum entry requirements as listed above

Mechanical Engineering at UNILORIN usually lasted a minimum duration of five (5) years for those admitted to 100 level and minimum of three (3) years for the students admitted through direct entry depending on the qualification used to process the admission.

The programme is accredited by the National University Commission (NUC) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)
