Olufunmilayo Olopade Inducted into National Academy Sciences

Dr. Olufunmilayo I. Olopade, M.D., F.A.C.P., O.O.N. have been inducted into the American's National Academy of Sciences (NAS)

The Walter L. Palmer Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics was inducted at the NAS 159 Annual General Meeting held in April 2022. 

Olopade an Alumna of St. Anne's School, Molete and the University of Ibadan both in Ibadan Oyo State, Nigeria was inducted along with other one hundred (119) US and thirty (30) international scholars and scientists who were elected members back in 2021. 

Membership of Olopade to NAS was facilitated by nomination and election and it is aim to recognise her outstanding performance and continuing achievement in early detection, treatment and prevention of breast cancer especially in women with high risk for the disease. She is a specialist in Hematology and Oncology with expertise in Medical Oncology, Cancer Genetics, Breast Cancer in young women and Cancer Risk and Prevention.

Dr. Olopade is a University of Chicago Faculty Physician, a Director, Center for Clinical Cancer Genetics and Global Health and was one of the five scientists from the institution to be inducted into the academy this year. 
 
Among many awards and honours Olopade has received are: 

  • Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist and Exceptional Mentor Award. 
  • MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Fellowship. 
  • American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professorship and 
  • A Nigerian's Officer of the Order of the Niger Award.
