Katherine who is also the director of the program in Innate Immunity is inducted at the National Academy of Science (NAS) 159th Annual Meeting which was held in April 2022 for her work which has laid the foundation for understanding of the inflammatory response during infection and the role of innate immunity in inflammatory diseases.
The education background of Fitzgerald whose research interests focused on understanding the molecular basis of host defense and the inflammatory process include

Memembership of NAS is achieved by election and so no application process is involved. Consideration of a candidate for membership begins with his or her nomination by a member of the academy, after which careful and critical process that results in a final ballot at the Academy's annual meeting which is hold in April each year.
Members are elected in recognition of their outstanding and continuing achievements in original research in one of the six area of sciences: Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Biological Science, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Biomedical Science, Behavioural and Social Science, Applied Biological, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
