A Faculty Member Aga Khan University Elected Member of The American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Professor Marleen Temmerman
A faculty member at the Aga Khan University, Nairobi, Kenya have been elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. 

Professor Marleen Temmerman the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was announced elected April 2022. She was among the 261 from around the world announced by the Academy President David W. Oxtoby and Chair of the Board of Directors Nancy C. Andrews, to be elected into the reputable association.

Marleen Temmerman, a Belgian by birth was one of thirty people that were elected International Honorary Members (IHM) and just one of the two persons drawn from Africa for the academy membership. She was elected for her outstanding contribution to her field of study: obstetrics and gynecology. 

Among many of the member and honours of Marleen Temmerman are:

  • The Chair, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Aga Khan University (AKU) Nairobi. 
  • Director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health Aga Khan University and was
  • Director of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR) at the World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva.
  • Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Ghent University in Belgium. 
  • Founding Director of the International Centre of Reproductive Health (ICRH) at Ghent University. 
  • Member of the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the post-2015 world.
  • Member of the European Parliamentary Forum, 
  • Chair of the HIV/AIDS Advisory Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
