Giles E. Oldroyd Inducted Into National Academy of Sciences

Professor Giles E. Oldroyd of the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge have been inducted into National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

He was inducted as International Member at the Academy 159th Annual General Meeting held in April, 2022 in the United States. He was one of the thirty (30) reseacher drawn from around the world after been elected members in 2021. 

Giles was inducted as International member of the National Academy of Sciences for studies on the mechanics by which plants form beneficial interactions with microorganisms. 

One hundred and fifty (120) national and thirty (30) international scholars and scientists were inducted at the this year NAS 159th AGM meeting in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

Membership is by nomination by members. While thorough investigations of the nominated candidates and election are done thereafter. 

Giles research focuses on understanding the signalling and developmental processes in plants that facilitate interactions with nitrogen fixing bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, that make the capture of nutrients from the environment possible. 

Professor Giles E. Oldroyd earned his PhD in Plant Biology from the University of California, Berkeley and his BA in Plant Biology from the University of East Anglia.

He is the leader of the seventeen members research group known as Sustainable Crop Nutrition base in Crop Science Centre, University of Cambridge. 

He is the Director of Crop Science Centre; group leader, Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge University and was group leader, John Innes Centre, Norwich

Among many honours that are bestowed on Giles in recognition of his outstanding wotks are: 

  • Society of Experimental Biology President’s Medal 
  • Royal Society Wolfson Research merit award and the 
  • EMBO Young Investigator award.
