Paula Hammond Inducted into National Academy of Sciences

Paula T Hammond, MIT, chemical Engineering
Paula T Hammond, the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have been inducted into the National Academy of Sciences.

A David H. Koch Professor of Engineering was inducted at the 159th Annual General Meeting of the reputable academy held in April, 2022. She was among the 120 national and 30 international scholars and scientist inducted, following their election in 2021.

Candidates are elected into the organisation, whose membership is widely regarded as mark of excellence in science, by nomination by members, in recognition of an outstanding and continuous achievement in original research.

Paula T. Hammond was inducted in recognition of her work which uses macromolecular design and synthesis to develop new technologies to treat disease. She is also the brain behind the designing of nanoscale materials that have the ability deliver drugs to specific parts of the body.

Among many of her work are:

  • The designing of tiny particles that target chemotherapy drugs directly to tumor cells.
  • Developing nanostructured dressings that is able to instantly stop bleeding. And
  • Designing of polymers to improve batteries, alternative fuel cells and the solar cells.
Professor Hammond earned her first degree in 1984 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her Master degree program was done at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1988. She went back to MIT for her PhD which she completed in 1993.
