Michael E. Cates Inducted into The National Academy of Sciences

A member of the Department of Applied Mathematics  and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge have been inducted into the National Academy of Sciences. 

Michael Elmhirst Cates, a theoretical physicist was inducted at the academy 159th Annual General Meeting held on April following his election in 2021.  

Cates who is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) was among the six (6) international inducted members from the United Kingdom and one of the two (2) among them that represent University of Cambridge.

One hundred and twenty (120) United States and thirty (30) international scholars and scientists were inducted in the year in mentioned. Their memberships was as a result of nomination and election from the existing members. The induction was in recognition of their exceptional contribution to the advancement of their field of studies especially for their original research work. 

Michael Cates was inducted for his contribution to theoretical physics. His work focus on the statistical mechanics of soft condensed matter such such as polymer, emulsion, foams, colloids, gels; flow of liquid crystal, dynamics of soft glasses,:cellular locomotion and rheology.

Professor Michael Elmhirst Cates is a: 
  • Fellow of Royal Society 
  • Fellow of Royal Society of Edinburgh 
  • Fellow Trinity College of Cambridge
  • Associate Member of the Higgs Centre. 

Recipient of:
  • Dirac Medal of the Institute of Physics 
  • Gold Medal of the British Society of Rheology and 
  • Weissenberg Award of the European Society of Rheology among many others.
