Robert Fettiplace Inducted into The National Academy of Sciences

Robert Pettiplace, University of Wincousin, pathologist
Robert Fettiplace a faculty member, Department of Neuroscience, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Madison, United Kingdom have been inducted member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS)

The physiologists, was among 120 United States and 30 international scholars and scientists who were inducted at the 159th AGM of the Academy. The induction follows their election which took place last year (2021).

New candidates are elected into NAS, one of the foremost association of scientists, by nomination by members, for excellent performance in their field of studies, especially for continuing achievements in original research.

Dr. Fettiplace whose research interests is in the transduction and turning in the hair cells of the inner ear and one of the six (6) inducted international members from United Kingdom was recognised for his groundbreaking work which revealed the mechano-transduction mechanism in inner ear sensory hair cells used for hearing and balance.

His work also include the discovery of the misery of electrical turning by which hair cells show different electrical properties for forming disparate sound frequency and so revealing the turning frequently is facilitated by each of the hair cell's complement of membrane potassium channels.

Fettiplace earned his first degree in Medicine from Cambridge University in 1968 and his Doctoral degree in Physiology in 1974.

Among many honours bestowed on Professor Robert Fettiplace are:

  • Kavli Prize in Neuroscience.
  • Steenbock Professor of Neural Sciences, University of Wincousin -Madison.
  • Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2012)
  • Fellow of the Royal Society of London.
