A Cameroon born, 5th year PhD candidate in the Department of Pharmacology & Cancer Biology, Duke University, Emmanuela Bonglack have been named a recipient of Schmidt Science Fellowship.
Bonglack, a mentee of Dr. Micah A. Luftig (PhD), a Virologist at the Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) was among the twenty-nine (29) early career scientists selected from around the world for the 2022 Schmidt Science Fellowship.
She was selected for the fellowship in recognition of her exceptional research work, in the area of infectious disease, cancer biology and pharmacology.
Every Schmidt Science Fellows are selected base on their passion to advance discovery, creating scientific innovation which are seen as promising and able improve the quality of life for all and sundry.
Schmidt Science Fellowship says:
Emmanuela’s PhD research advanced our understanding of cancers driven by Epstein-Barr Virus, where she identified new therapeutic targets. She will now pivot from genetic approaches to tumorigenesis to data science approaches, integrating machine learning and genomics approaches to mitigate chronic disease risk in iron-deficient populations – training predictive models for personalized medicine in low-resource settings.
Winning Schmidt Science Fellowship entitle Bonglack to a stipend of $100,000 per year for up to two years to support research in her field of studies. She will also receive personal mentoring and professional development seasons thereby improving her potential as future scientific leader.
Emmanuela Bonglack was a recipient of Bell Award and an NCI F31 pre-doctoral fellowship award.
