4 Pathways To Securing Engineering Admission North West University

There are eight (8) engineering courses on offer at the Faculty of Engineering, North West University, South Africa. Each lasted a minimum of four (4) years on full time study mode and are accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)

The engineering courses are:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical and  Electronic Engineering
  • Computer and Electronic Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Electromechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering
To secure an admission to study for a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree in any of the courses listed above requires making the minimum admission requirements for the faculty. The minimum admission requirements vary from one admission pathway to another. A student disadvantage in one may lead him to secure admission via the other.

Pathway One: Matric (NSS or IES) Minimum Requirements

This is the regular option with which admissions are process at North West University and in South Africa at large.

Being engineering courses, it requires applicants to provide grade 12 qualifications with scores as listed below for example.

  • Mathematics: Minimum of 70%
  • Physical Science: Minimum of 70%
  • Language: Minimum of 60% for Afrikaans or English (the language of tuition)
  • APS Score: Minimum of 34
  • Exemption: Gr. 12 exemption

If applicants are not up to the scores, hope is not lost, they can still be considered for an admission via one of the other three pathways listed below.

Note: the grade 12 scores required as above changed every years. They are dictated by the number of applicants to the number of open spaces

Pathway 2: Engineering Test

In a situation a student is unable to provide required grades 12 scores as above or as will be dictated by the admission committee, the student could be called for an engineering test. A satisfactory Matric result plus an acceptable achievement in engineering test give the student a chance to be admitted to study one of the courses above. The quality of grades make in Matric will determine whether a student would be invited for an engineering test or not.

Pathway 3: Post School Studies

This is applicable to those that were not able to make acceptable grade 12 scores for engineering but already have completed year one of a degree course in Mathematics or Physics and are interested in pursuing a career as engineers. They will be allowed to apply for their desire engineering courses if the acceptable scores were made in their first year BSc modules and most have completed 120 credits in the year.

Pathway Four: Xcel Preparation Programme

A grade 12 result with less than 60% in Mathematics and in Physical Science is not acceptable for an admission engineering course at North West University via pathway one and pathway two but holders of such result could be enrolled for the Faculty of Engineering Xcel Preparation programme.

Good performance on completion of the programme plus acceptable grade 12 result will eligible a student to be selected for an engineering degree programme at North West University.

Important
The last three pathways are use to bring in students when there is no enough students to fill open spaces using Matric minimum requirements. And this mean chances of being considered for an admission via the other three pathways are slim.

But students could always fulfill their ambition of becoming engineers via one of these partway at University of North West, South Africa.
