Chemical Engineering Entry Requirements | North West University

On this page is the latest entry requirements accepted  by the Department of Chemical  Engineering, North West University (NWU) South Africa for it's undergraduate degree course. This minimum requirements include for the international students. 

The Department was created to train engineers capable of designing, developing and managing processes involve in the conversion of raw materials to finished useful products. It is one of the eight (8) courses the Faculty of Engineering North West University offers.

  • Faculty: Engineering 
  • School: Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering 
  • Degree Level: undergraduate 
  • Duration of Course: 4 years 
  • Study Mode: full time 
  • Qualifications Awarded: Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Chemical  Engineering 
  • Accreditation: Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) 


The minimum admission requirements for Chemical Engineering as provided below are for the holders of NSC or IEB and for the holders of the higher qualifications. 


Holders of NSC or IEB Qualification

  • Mathematics: Minimum of 70%
  • Physical Science: Minimum of 70%
  • Language: Minimum of 60% for Afrikaans or English (the language of tuition)
  • APS Score: Minimum of 34 
  • Exemption: Gr. 12 exemption

The minimum qualification quoted above is merit but if a student is not able to achieve it, minimum requirement stated below could be accepted from him but with good scores in the engineering test. 

  • 65% for both Mathematics
  • 65% for Physical Science
  • 60% for English / Afrikaans (the language of instruction)
  • APS of 31 plus 
  • Engineering Test 

Preparatory Programme (Xcel)

This is a preparatory programme for students who may want to study an engineering course at North West University but their NSC or IEB scores is not near 1 and 2 above. 
The minimum requirements for this programme is:
  • Mathematics: </=60% and 
  • Physical Science: </=60% 
  • Complete Xcel programme plus
  • meeting all the engineering programme requirements at the end of the year

Year One BSc Degree Students

The following minimum requirements will be accepted to enrol for a BEng in Chemical  Engineering from year one BSc students 
  • Must complete BSc year one with mainstream Mathematics and Physics 
  • Minimum of 60% in each of the year one modules 
  • Complete 120 credit in that year one
  • Acceptable scores in engineering test

International Students 

If you are applying for an admission as an international student from one of the countries (Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Senegal Liberia, Mali, Niger, Cameroon and more) in West Africa, your O'Level result (WASSCE, SSCE, GCE O'Level) will be accepted but with minimum of  credit passes in: 
  • Physics 
  • Mathematics 
  • English Language and 
  • Some other science subject as will be determined by the admission committee plus 
  • Engineering Test
