While many students don't know that they exist, many that know don't usually relate with them either at program level or at professional level.
The University of Minnesota recommend that a student should meet a faulty adviser at least once in a semester before registering for classes. They have also published six ways they are useful to academic development if student-faculty relationship is well harnessed.

The publication revealed that an advising hold is placed on each student’s record, so that students cannot register until they have met with their adviser.
