Nigerian Universities Running Unaccredited Engineering Courses

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has named the Nigerian Universities that were running unaccredited engineering programmes for students to beware of.

The named universities are either continuing running engineering programmes that their accreditation have expired and were unable to renew it or are running engineering programmes that were not accredited at all.

The Registrar of the Council, Ademola Adisa at 179th ordinary meeting of the council on Friday in Abuja said that five universities refused to renew their licenses for various engineering courses since 2020. It should be noted that COREN is responsible for the accreditation of engineering education and training in the university in Nigeria.

List of Universities Running Unaccredited Engineering Courses in Nigeria

According to Ademola Adisa, the affected universities were:

  • The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA)
  • University of Calabar (UNICALABAR)
  • Madibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola
  • Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma and
  • Technical University, Ibadan.

The breakdown of the list of the unaccredited courses these universities were running as stated  by the COREN registrar were:

University of Abuja (UNIABUJA):

Running expired accredited courses in Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering since March 2020. Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering since April, 2022

Modibbo Adama University (MAU) Yola.

Failed accreditation renewal. Agricultural Engineering. Civil Engineering and Elect/Elect Engineering expired since October, 2020. Accreditation for Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering expired since March 2021.

University of Calabar (UNICAL):

Running illegal engineering courses

Technical University, Ibadan.

Running illegal engineering programmes.

Engineer Ademola Adisa noted that the engineering courses at both the UNICAL and TU, Ibadan were not accredited and so they were running illegal engineering courses.

It is therefore for prospective engineering courses students to beware of the universities mentioned above. It is part of the rules that a certificate earned during the period an engineering programme is not accredited will not be recognized.

COREN therefore said that the listed universities are not qualified to admit students for or graduate students in the above mentioned programmes until their accreditation is secured.
