The University of Fort Hare has announced the opening of it's first ever Gender Based Violence (GBV) Prevention Unit Office. This is in a move to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) within its host community and in South Africa at lage. It also launched the “Reclaiming a Safer UFH” campaign, declaring in unison that indeed: #GBVPreventionIsYourBusiness

Among many other things, the office which is located on the Campus will serve as:

  • A place to work on Gender Based Violence (GBV) need and draft their periodic report.
  • As a coordinating place to ensure effective measures are put in place to minimize or totally eradicate sexual and gender based violence.
  • Place where affected people can get support and advice through local training, workshops and capacity building

A publication by the University of Fort Hare (UFH) stated that the project is an historic moment that re-affirms the university’s stance of zero-tolerance of GBV on campus. It also serves to honour the memories of Nosicelo Mtebeni (a final year lawa student brutally murdered by her boyfriend) and Siphosethu Mqombothi, two UFH female students who died at the hands of GBV.
