FUTA Student Union Leaders Held Leadership Training Programme, Told To Shun Social Vices

Last week Thursday, a leadership training programme was organised for the newly elected Federal University of Technology (FUTA) Akure, Student Union Leaders. The programme was organised to orientate the elected leaders on what leadership entails, so that they could have a smooth running offices and tenure.

Delivering the opening address at the 2019/2020 FUTA Student Union Leader's leadership training, Professor Gbenga Onibi, the Dean of Student Affairs of the institution stated that the retreat was necessary to impart knowledge into the newly elected leaders of the Student Union taking into consideration the many tasks and responsibilities of being a leader of an organisation or a union.

The Professor stated that he believes many issues pertaining to being a good leader would be dealt with in the course of the training. He noted that someone cannot be a leader without first be a member by saying, ''You are leaders of Student Union because you are first students of FUTA''.

Professor Onibi then admonished the elected leaders to strive to always carry others along in whatever decision or action they are taking.

The guest speaker at the occasion Mr. Ayorinde Ogunrunku, former Registrar of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife started his keynote address by saying the newly elected leaders should be hardworky to have a great achievement. He said, they should also try hard to shun all social vices, because it can damage their reputation.

The erudite administrator went on to say that student leaders should be part of campaign to promote better education in the society and advance best practices in student unionism. He said, a leader is he who have intellectual ability to get things done in a good way.

He then advice them to put down in writing all their visions and missions for easy monitoring and execution.

Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Professor Joseph Fuwape enjoined the leaders to join the campaign to make FUTA a globally reputable brand name. He said they should protect the name of the institution in words and in deeds.

The new FUTA Student Union leaders were voted into office in a keenly contested election that was held Tuesday 14 May, 2019 .

The election which was witnessed by many members of the school management, including Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Gbenga Onibi saw Esedere Abraham better known as Father AB emerged the the new President of the Student Union. He beat other two contestants to clinch the post.

The names of the other newly elected leaders of FUTA Student Union are:

  • Abugan Emmanuel (Catalyst), General Secretary
  • Ajele Ifeoluwa (Ifekitan), Public Relation Officer
  • Filani Temiloluwa (Taymee), Welfare Director
  • Akinbolusere Michael (McBolous), Financial Secretary.
  • Oladiran Ayodele (Pendagron), Treasurer
  • Korede Waheed (Ex Boi), Director of Social
  • Komolafe Akinsanmi (Akinsco), Director of Sport and 
  • Olatuja Ifeoluwa (Oh-Jay), Assistant General Secretary
The election was through e-voting and it was conducted at the FUTA computer resources centre in a well secured environment and very strict processes.

The inauguration swearing in ceremony for the new leaders was done at Hilltop Auditorium of Federal University of Technology, Akure on the 7th of July 2019.

The leadership training programme which was well attended by students, academic and non academic staffs of the institution and invited guests was held at Premier Holiday Resort, Igbara-Oke, Ondo State.
