Private and Government Polytechnics, Benue State, Nigeria


Benue State was created in 1976. It was part of the then Jos when created and a year after it's creation, it got it's first polytechnic. This show the hunger the people of the then newly created state have for technical education. They knew that education aid development.

Benue State, being one of the states in the North-Central part of Nigeria dominated by Christian accept western education early and promote it well. The state has one of the highest number of tertiary institutions in the North.

The establishment of it first polytechnic one years after it's creation shows how much the state cherish education. The people of the state must have waited for the opportunity and when it finally came they grab it.

Benue has five NBTE recognised polytechnics at the time of putting up this page and the first was founded back in 1977 by the state military government of Colonel Abdullahi Shelleng. It was reported that on establishment the state polytechnic was called Murtala College of Art and Science and Technology.

One of the few military schools in Nigeria is also part of the ND and HND certificate given institutions in the state. Though this school is intended to be moved to Borno state, yet part of it is still in Benue.

Beside the two government polytechnics in Benue are three private owned ones. The first private polytechnic in the "Food Basket of Nation'' was founded in 2007 and the other two were established nine years after. People behind the private polytechnics are the indigenes of the state.

Only one city in Benue can boost to have two polytechnics and that is Gboko. Other three polytechnics including the military run one are each in other cities of the state.
